BRATTLEBORO - In 1941, artist Henri Matisse, bedridden and sick with cancer, turned to a new medium after he found he could nu use a paintbrush picking up scissors, he gained a new lease on his enormous creativity, making cutouts of brightly colored paper. He referred to this technique as "painting with scissors," and an early result was the groundbreaking book "Jazz" which Matisse prepared in 1942 8ud had published in 1947. Inspired by the music, "Jazz" contained 20 color plates and writing by Matisse and was initially only printed in 100 copies_ It remains an influential and much-admired work today.

JAZZFEST, a monthly, ninety minute live conceit will premier on WAMC's Northeast Public Radio Network on Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:30 pm. Performing before a live studio audience, JAZZFEST will be hosted by saxophonist Clifford Aerie along with Critical Theory ensemble.
